Is religion a war machine?

Here’s one thing you might hear when trying to talk to someone about Jesus.

“I hate religion! Religion has caused more death and wars then anything else!”

Well, let’s look at some facts here. Philip and Axelrod’s three-volume Encyclopedia of Wars lists about 1,763 wars that have been fought over the course of human history. Of those wars, the authors categorize 123 as being “religious in nature.” That means of all wars, about 6% were religious. Now subtract Islam’s wars from the religious wars, and you have about 3%. So, of all the wars fought in our history, minus Islam’s wars, only about 3% have been religious in nature.

The truth is, non-religious motivations, and atheistic philosophies have caused nearly all of mankind’s wars.

Non-Religious Dictator Lives Lost

Joseph Stalin – 42,672,000

Mao Zedong – 37,828,000

Adolf Hitler – 20,946,000

Chiang Kai-shek – 10,214,000

Vladimir Lenin – 4,017,000

Hideki Tojo – 3,990,000

Pol Pot – 2,397,000

If religion isn’t the number 1 cause of wars, then what is it? The same thing that triggers all crime, cruelty, loss of life, ect…Sin.
We shouldn’t be surprised though. Jesus told us, “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness. All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man” (Mark 7:21–23).”

In short, don’t believe people who shout religion is the number one cause of wars.

Common misunderstandings

“I don’t believe God would send anyone to hell. Doesn’t the Bible say God is love?”
Yes, 1 John 4:8 says God is love. However, God is also;
Just (Deuteronomy 32:4)

All powerful (Psalm 33:9; Isaiah 40:28; 46:10)

Omnipresent (Psalm 139:7-12; Jeremiah 23:24)

All knowing (Romans 16:27; Hebrews 4:13; 1 John 3:20)

Sovereign (Romans 16:27; Hebrews 4:13; 1 John 3:20)
And much, much more…
To limit God to just one quality and ignore the rest of His attributes, is idolatry. By elevating God’s love and ignoring His other qualities, you are forming a god of your own image to fit your own needs. You are picking and choosing which qualities of God you like and discarding the ones you do not. You have made up in your mind a god that does not exist. A god that does not convict you of your sin. A god that allows you to live however you want without any guilt.
So yes, God is love, but He is much, much

more than just that. He is a righteous, holy, perfect, all knowing, infinitely powerful, all wise judge. And because He is a good judge, and not corrupt, He will not allow evil to go unpunished. But evil is not just murder, rape, robbery, ect…It is lying, lusting, taking the Lords name in vain, stealing… So if you haven’t already, repent of your sins and put your faith in Christ alone for the forgiveness of your sins.

Scientific Accuracy in the Bible

Astronomers have recently discovered a massive hole in space above the northern hemisphere where there are no stars, no planets, no gases, nothing…I guess we shouldn’t be surprised though.
Job 26:7-“He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing.”

“University of Minnesota astronomers have found an enormous hole in the Universe, nearly a billion light-years across, empty of both normal matter such as stars, galaxies and gas, as well as the mysterious, unseen “dark matter.” While earlier studies have shown holes, or voids, in the large-scale structure of the Universe, this new discovery dwarfs them all.

“Not only has no one ever found a void this big, but we never even expected to find one this size,” said Lawrence Rudnick of the University of Minnesota astronomy professor. Rudnick, along with grad student Shea Brown and associate professor Liliya Williams, also of the University of Minnesota, reported their findings in a paper accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal.

Astronomers have known for years that, on large scales, the Universe has voids largely empty of matter. However, most of these voids are much smaller than the one found by Rudnick and his colleagues. In addition, the number of discovered voids decreases as the size increases.
“What we’ve found is not normal, based on either observational studies or on computer simulations of the large-scale evolution of the Universe,” Williams said.”

Spiritual anorexia

We all get hungry and need to eat. It’s a way of survival. A way of life. Our stomach growls and we know we need to feed it. It comes naturally. Well, if you really listen, really pay attention, so does feeding your spiritual-lets call it-stomach. It needs to be fed. And it needs to be fed often.

If going to church is the only spiritual feeding you get, you are starving yourself.

All week long, you are surrounded by the world. You are bombarded by worldly values, worldly philosophy, worldly activities, ect…all things that are contrary to what God teaches us and commands us how to live.
Imagine if you drank poison 6 days a week, then on the last day you drank a nice, healthy, fruit smoothie. So you tell yourself, “I’m healthy because I had my fruit smoothie today!”

No one would say that person is healthy. Yet we as Christians sometimes think that we are taking care of ourselves spiritually by attending church for an hour on Sunday, then spending the remaining 144 hours of the week without ever reading the Bible, praying, fellowship, ect…

Take care of yourselves. Let’s follow Job’s example.

“I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.” -Job 23:12

Just give it time…

This is funny, because we know that this would never happen. How much more foolish is it to think that what you see around you today evolved from nothing that exploded billions of years ago!? Do you have any idea how INSANELY complex the most “simple” cell in our body is? If no one here realistically expects this picture to ever happen, why in the world would you expect an explosion to create life and everything needed for life?

I don’t have, “blind faith.”

A lot of people mistake faith to be a blind belief in something. Something you believe with no reason. This is contrary to what the Bible teaches us. We are to examine ourselves and be knowledgeable about what we believe, and be ready to answer the questions people may have for us.
-The Bible tells us to “examine everything carefully” and to believe only that which is actually true (1 Thessalonians 5:21, Colossians 2:4).
-The Bible commends the people in the city of Berea for verifying that the words spoken by the apostle Paul were actually true (Acts 17:11).
-God desires that we use our minds and not just our hearts (Matthew 22:37). God says, “Come now, and let us reason together” (Isaiah 1:18).
-The Bible exhorts Christians to have answers for people with questions (1 Peter 3:15).
-God desires all people “to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4).
If you would describe your faith as, “blind faith,” then I would encourage you to strengthen your faith by asking yourself why you believe what you believe is true. There is evidence in almost every direction you look!

I don’t have enough faith for evolution.

Nobody would believe that Windows 7 is the result of chance, but many believe that the human brain that created Windows 7 is the result of chance.
They will sometimes say, “Well, we didn’t start off this complex. We started off as a simple-cell, then slowly became more advanced.”
Years ago, microscopes weren’t nearly as good as they are now. The cell used to look like a blob and it was easy to think that a blob could come about by accident. We have better microscopes now. According to Michael Behe, a biochemist, a cell is run like a really a big city with freeways to deliver nutrients and garbage to their destinations.
Here is a so called, “simple cell” that used to look like a blob under old microscopes. Now, we know better than to call them simple. Who knows, with future technology, we’ll probably find out it is even more complex than this!
I don’t have enough faith to believe this happened by chance, without an intelligent mind to create it. Not to mention that life somehow magically came from non-life.

Scripture got it right….again.

The most recent estimate of stars in the universe is 300 billion trillion. That’s a 3 followed by 23 zeros. (The number is constantly growing as we find more).
Fourteen billion years (the evolutionists theory of how old the universe is) isn’t nearly enough time to explain so many stars, unless it was an everyday occurrence, which we do not observe.
Save yourself the headache and stick with Gods Word which is unchangeable. Secular scientists will catch up eventually….

Does the Qur’an have the same evidence that the Bible does?

There are a lot of reasons for doubting that the Qur’an is inspired.

-It contradicts known facts of science. For example, it teaches that the sun actually descends down into a muddy spring on the earth (Surah 18:86). You could get away with a statement like that in certain parts of the world in the seventh century. Obviously, today, we know that the sun is actually on a circuit through space.

-The Qur’an contradicts known facts of history. For example, it denies that Jesus of Nazareth was crucified on a cross (Surah 4:157), something that has been substantiated not only by the Bible but also by extrabiblical sources, such as the Jewish Talmud and Flavius Josephus.

-The Qur’an has multiple internal inconsistencies.

There are no good reasons to accept the Qur’an as inspired Scripture. The most popular evidence that Muslims try to give for the divine inspiration of the Qur’an is its literary beauty, but this is a highly questionable means of testing a document for divine inspiration. What would stop us from believing that Shakespeare’s writings were also divinely inspired? After examining these things, it would be safe to conclude that the Qur’an is not an inspired book.

Why follow Jesus and Chrsitianity?

When people ask, “How’d you choose Christianity? Why not Mormonism?” (Or any other religion).

We need to give more than just subjective answers. Some examples of subjective answers would be:

“I just feel it’s true.”
“I get a feeling of peace when I pray.”
“I’ve had an experience.”
“I grew up in the church.”
“Jesus gives me joy.”
“Ever since I became a Christian, my life has straightened out. I used to be a bad person.”

Don’t you think a Mormon (I’m not picking on Mormons specifically, just using them as an example today) would say the exact same thing? Of course they do!

We need to be ready to give people some OBJECTIVE answers and tell them WHY we believe what we believe (1Peter 3:15).

Some examples of objective answers would be,

“The Bible is the only scientifically accurate religious book.”
“There’s reliable eyewitness accounts within the Bible.”
“All of the places and names of people and rulers of different areas have been confirmed by sources outside of the Bible.”
“The Bible is the only book that contains hundreds of specific, accurately fulfilled prophecies.”

Now, let’s try looking at Mormonism. How does it compare?

The Book of Mormon is full of problems. It contradicts the Bible (which it claims to follow). It contains (a lot of) false prophecy. Many doctrinal and grammatical changes have been made since its initial publishing in 1830. It contains extensive plagiarism of the King James Version of the Bible. Independent, non-Mormon archaeological verification is absolutely lacking (the Bible has more than plenty). The Book of Mormon is full of scientific problems. The open-minded individual who is willing to follow the evidence (or in this case, severe lack of evidence) wherever it leads can easily see that the Book of Mormon is an early nineteenth-century piece of American fiction.

That, my friends, is why I believe Christianity is true. It is also the same reason that I don’t believe others.

Overwhelming amounts of evidence for the Bible. Severe lack of evidence for other world religions.
